Okinawan Shisa are imaginary beasts that are believed to ward off evil spirits. They are the most popular symbol of Okinawa. Register for one of our Shisa-making experiences to create your very own handmade Shisa souvenir.
VESSEL-MAKING EXPERIENCE

1-DAY INTERNSHIP
Gain valuable real-world experience, working alongside the artisans of Okinawa’s premier production pottery studio. Our one-day internship program is perfect for residents and tourists staying longer than one week.
2-DAY HAND-BUILDING COURSE
Visit our workshop, twice in one week, to create an authentic hand-built Shisa sculpture or vessel in the centuries-old style of Tsuboya Ware. Choose from either underglaze painting, slip trailing, line engraving, or a combination of line engraving and underglaze painting to decorate your vessel. Our two-day courses are perfect for residents and tourists staying in Okinawa for more than one week.
4-DAY YACHIMUN (POTTERY) COURSE
Visit our workshop, once a week for four weeks, to learn hand-building and wheel throwing techniques in the centuries-old style of Tsuboya Ware. Choose either slip trailing, black hakeme and line engraving, white hakeme and line engraving, or white hakeme and underglaze painting to decorate your work. Our 4-day courses are suitable for residents and tourists staying longer than one month who wish to delve deep into the world of traditional Okinawan pottery.
